Written by Gary & Anne Marie Ezzo, Baby hood Transitions is a follow on manual from Preparation for Parenting.
It covers the ages 5-12 months and is a brilliant resource for the rapidly changing days and nights of a baby who has grown out of newborn hood!
Again, we used this book every week in our house as a go to guide for keeping up with the changing needs of our lovely little one.
Babyhood Transitions reiterates and works off the principles of the feed-wake-sleep cycle instilled in the first few months of life and helps you to transition your baby into the new world of solids, active awake time, and less sleeps during the day.
Probably the principle we took from this book (which is a trade mark of these series) is that of BEGIN AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON. We have found this to be a tried and tested way of starting and continuing training in certain areas such as sleep, feeding, and behaviour. And when we are not sure how to approach something, we say to each other, "how do I want this area to look in a year or more?" and then go towards that goal from the beginning. There are certainly days when this isn't practical or just isn't working but we get through that day with whatever works, and then start again the next with how we would like to begin and mean to go on. I have found it usually only takes a couple of days for a baby to catch on to something if I do it consistently enough. For this age it was mostly around eating, being spoon fed and learning to drink water from a sippy cup and after a few days of trying, failing, trying again, going back to milk feeds etc we managed to get the basics of something after a few days.
Something I always try and remember from the Ezzo's is that consistency is key. Whatever I would like to instil at that time, consistency is what will get us there.
What we learnt from Babyhood Transitions:
- When to start solids & how.
- Nutritional information & recipe ideas for starting solids.
- Practical feeding advice as to how to help feed your little one as they are starting solids.
- Advice for sleep and nap questions related to this age bracket of babyhood.
- Ideas on how to manage baby's wake time activities at this age.
- How and when to wean your baby off breast or bottle feeding.
- Tips and principles behind pre toddler training and correction.
- Tips on cultivating methods of communication with your baby.
The book also offers a very large topic pool at the back which answers a lot of FAQ's the authors have been regularly asked over their years of professional support for families of this age group.
