I am slowly reducing the amount of plastic that we accumulate and use in our house, particularly when it comes to food and drink and this is why it is so great shopping at The Source Bulk Foods in Vic Park! The store works off a 'no waste shopping' concept, so you must bring your own (or you can buy some there to start with) containers/jars/boxes/bags to take your purchases home in.
Recently I have started only buying pantry products in glass jars:
1) So our food isn't being stored in plastics while we slowly use them
2) So that I have glass jars to reuse once we've finished with the product
Here I have stored things like nuts, seeds, oats, coconut chips and flour in jars that I bought with things like honey, yoghurt, curry paste, coconut oil and a specially bought 1kg jar from The Source Bulk Foods. Glass is one of the best options for food storage as it has no chemicals that can leach into the foods due to change in temperature, plus they can be cleaned thoroughly and even sterilised with boiling water if needed.
I have found the best trick to getting labels and glue off glass jars is buy putting some coconut oil (or any type of oil) on the label and letting it soak for a while. You can literally peel it off once it has gone 'oily'.
I actually get excited now when we finish something that we bought in a jar-more storage!!
