The first way that we are going to look at using essential oils, is applying the oils topically. Using oils topically is a great way to get immediate comfort where you need it or you can rub on the back of your neck, on your wrists/pulse points or apply on the soles of your feet to get them into your body system.
Why your feet you ask? Well if you are trying to get the oils into your system then the feet are a great place to start. In addition to the benefits of reflexology, each foot has approximately 7, 200 nerve endings, more nerve endings per square centimetre than any other part of the body! If we look at our nerve network like freeways through our body then it is easy to understand how applying oils to the feet is the quickest way to get the oils to where your body needs them!
When using essential oils topically you don’t need to use half the bottle. doTERRA oils are incredibly potent, 1 drop is powerful enough to service every cell in your body! To give you a comparison, 1 drop of peppermint is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea! So, keep in mind, less is more. You can always apply more if needed, but you can’t take away. Please also use with caution on sensitive skin and remember to keep them out of your eyes, ear canals and nose.
When applying the oils topically it is important to dilute them. Dilution helps to guard against skin irritation. Oils like Oregano and Cinnamon are hot oils and can burn the skin if used undiluted. Dilution also avoids the evaporation of your precious oils. If you apply the oils neat then you’ll lose a lot of the oil to evaporation before it is able to be absorbed into your skin. Applying with a carrier oil helps to weight them into your blood stream.
When diluting essential oils, you can use any carrier oil such as olive, coconut or almond. My favourite carrier oil is Fractionated Coconut Oil. FCO has the fatty chains removed so that it doesn’t solidify when cold. This is handy when making up roller or spray bottles as it will stay liquid for easy use. It also doesn’t leave a oily residue on your skin like olive or almond oil does, doesn’t stain your clothes and has no smell so you are able to enjoy the scent of the essential oil you are using.
I make up roller and spray bottles of my oils and blends so that they are easily accessible and ready to use when I need them. I find this helps me get the most use out of my oils. I recommend only using glass bottle for storing your oils as plastics will leach chemicals into your blends! Hospital grade plastics that won’t break down are okay. The general dilution guide I go by is 5 drops of essential oil per 10 mls of carrier oil for an adult. When using on children I use 2-3 drop per 10 mls and for babies just 1 drop per 10mls.
